Vermont artist Mary Azarian has illustrated over 50 books. In 1999 Snowflake Bentley, her picture book about Vermont’s famous photographer of snow flake crystals won the Caldecott Award, which is like winning the Academy Award for Best Picture!
Mary grew up on her grandfather’s small farm just outside Washington, DC. Her interest in gardening developed at an early age and continues to this day.
Mary began drawing and painting at an early age and fell in love with woodcuts when she made her first relief print in the 4th grade. She studied printmaking at Smith College.
After graduating from college she moved to a small hill farm in northern Vermont with her husband Tom. The years on the farm became the inspiration for many of her prints.
